1; What is gravity?
To understand gravity in this
model we first have to look at some oldfashioned ideas of explaining light
by Newton.
Newton thought, that light travels as a wave through the so called ether,
a substance filling the universe in whole providing a carrier to light
in the same way as for example air provides for sound waves.
However, the proof that there could be no ether like this was tried to
be given by Michelson Morley in 1887.
They built a so called interferometer that sent out two light beams: one
beam of light was pointed along the direction of the earth's motion, the
other light beam was pointed at the 90 degree angle relative to the first
light beam. The beams were reflected by mirrors and focussed at a common
point where they could interfere with each other. The light beam travelling
along the direction of the earth's motion around the sun was expected
to travel at a different speed compared to the light beam travelling at
90 degrees compared to this light beam.
Unfortunately they did not encounter any interference that suggested these
two beams of light travelled at even slightly different speeds. They would
have been able to measure a difference in speed if there were one. They
could not detect any difference in speed between these two light beams.
So if there is no change in light speed whatsoever and the earth is moving
(through the ether) there cant be possibly an ether. That was their conclusion.
Later measurements with microwaves also proofed the constancy of speed
of light too so the hope the difference was too small for them to measure
was destroyed at all.
But could there still be an explanation for an omnipresent Aether in
the universe?
Let us estimate that there is a kind of carrier for the universe, a gigantic
mesh that holds it, on which every atom is “fixed” like a
photo lying on a table showing a person.
If one measures the distance from the person to the brim of the photo
he or she can easily proof that this person does not move. However we
know that we can move the person easily by just taking the photo and putting
it somewhere else on the table. Now let us also assume that a lamp is
shining at the photo and we move the photo on the table again. The only
proper conclusion for a person measuring the person on the photo against
its brim would be of course that the light has moved, because we think
that we have already “proofed” that the person hasn’t
moved.
So what if Michelson Morley did the same thing?...
They can prove the constancy of light while in the same time its not impossible
to have an ether if we agree that there could be at least one additional
dimension.
To be able to imagine a 4 dimensional room it is important to use a “trick”
often used by Albert Einstein to imagine a multidimensional environment:
Lets make a “photo”, a two dimensional picture of the universe
so we have one “extra” dimension to play with.
